ATTN: Joseph Sprute Joseph - First, let me thank you for your response to the calls for "Proposals for Major Initiatives" and for comments on the 2007-2009 ISOC Budget Plan. The Board of Trustees met in November of 2006 they examined both the proposals in hand and the broader goals for the so called Major Initiatives. After much discussion, the Board referred the proposals to ISOC staff for review and recommendations. They also determined that further research was needed before they could determine an appropriate long term "Major" project. Staff reviewed all of the proposals and presented their recommendations to the Board in mid January. After careful review, the Board approved those recommendations. In general, proposals fell into one of three groups: ideas closely aligned with ISOC's current work and would therefore be integrated into current plans as appropriate, ideas that should be deferred until the long-term "Major" project has been agreed, and ideas which were deemed outside ISOC's abilities and interests. The following is a brief summary of the disposition of your proposal: "Trusted Virtual Private Network" ISOC staff have recommended that your proposal be revisited after the Board of Trustees has established their guidelines for a major initiative. Current thinking revolves around a shared vision of the Internet in 2020. This proposal posits one potential solution for assuring first reporter/first responder reachability across the Internet. The underlying notion of a global Internet alert system may fit within the vision of the 2020 Internet although the specific technical solution proposed may not be our final choice for such a service. When guidelines for the Major Initiatives have been finalized by the Board, we will return to this proposal and we look forward to your continued input and participation in this process. Feel free to contact me or the relevant ISOC staff member if you have any question Sincerely, Lucy Lynch Director of Technical Projects Internet Society cc Lynn St. Amour lynch@isoc.org
